Welcome

This site has been set up to demonstrate how I incorporate multi-modal texts and new literacies into my teaching practice. Topics covered will illustrate my understanding of the impact of new communication technologies and globalisation and how that is changing social and literate practices. Conclusions will be drawn about what it means to be literate in the 21st century.

The site provides a multi-modal webspace for assessments and reflections for EDU8415, Multi-modal texts and New Literacies.

A vision of K - 12 students today.

The above video highlights the different modes of literacy that students of today engage in. When viewing this however, we still do need to be aware that not all students have these technologies at their ready disposal.

"Australia has another great dividing range. In the age of the information economy, modems - not mountains - separate the population" (Manktelow, 2001).

Among the clientele I teach, several students have never used social networking sites, and many have limited access to the internet because of lack of infrastructure available in their location. Access to computers is also a limiting factor if you are sharing one computer between several students. Of course socio economic factors also come into the equation as do lifestyle choice factors. This is the reality of the 'digital divide' as it applies to my teaching context.

I believe that the perception of young people today as 'digital natives', is not always accurate.
