Assignment 1 Lesson Outlines Page 2

In order to improve the literacy quality of my lessons, I will link them to the Four Resources model of literacy and focus on the following areas. (Luke and Freebody, 1992)

Code Breaker – recognising and using the features and architecture of electronic texts (images, hypertext, text, audio, video) Below, my comment in relation to the reading and decoding of electronic texts in response to a discussion forum question:

This was an interesting task because it made me realise the variety of skills and knowledge involved in accessing information from the web. I think that many of us who are familiar with this take it for granted...and sometimes take it for granted that students can just 'do this'. Some can, some can't. Reading electronic text and printed text is different and requires different skills and knowledge. When creating online courses for students we need to ensure that we are aware of processes involved in reading online material. (Carmel Mayer, discussion posting, 31.3.10)

Meaning Maker – understanding and composing texts in relation to acquired knowledge and prior knowledge

Text user – knowing how text is composed and the social function (tone, formality, sequence) in relation to blogs.

Text Critic – Understanding that texts are not neutral. Understanding and analysing text representations in specific relation to a weblog. Redesign of text to suit own purpose.
